SHORT COURSE COBEM 2023: FUNDAMENTALS OF COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS AND APPLICATIONS

COBEM 2023 - 27th International Congress of Mechanical Engineering

By Clovis R. Maliska and Tiago Faria The numerical simulation of engineering problems involving fluid flows, known as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), is becoming increasingly important in solving complex engineering problems, especially in the context of digital twins, IoT and artificial intelligence, as simulation plays a crucial role in these applications. This short course teaches the basics of the finite volume method, the main numerical technique used in CFD, and then demonstrates the application of this methodology to various engineering problems. The first part of the course deals with the conservation equations, their integration using the finite volume method, interpolation functions and aspects of the solution of the linear system. For both cell-center and cell-vertex methods. An extension of CFD techniques for poroelasticity with respect to pressure oscillations is briefly presented. In the second part, selected examples of fluid flows are shown to demonstrate the performance of the methodology. The construction of geometries and the creation of models are discussed. Real engineering problems are presented using modern tools available, showing that numerical simulation is inextricably linked to the progress of Industry 4.0.
