CREATIVE WRITING: RADIO DRAMA

writing radio drama

In this workshop, Vincent Woods will discuss the medium of radio in general, and the specific area of radio drama as a creative space in which writers can explore the use of sound, music, time, narrative and character. Woods will consider the history and development of radio drama in Ireland from the early days of radio in the 1920s, through a golden age of the RTÉ repertory company and celebrated productions such as the 1982 adaptation of James Joyce’s Ulysses, to contemporary radio dramas such as the Pat Collins adaptation of Patrick Kavanagh’s poem The Great Hunger. In an audio media world dominated by true crime podcasts and provocative ‘shock jocks’, Woods asks what is the role of radio drama, and argues that it is a vital, creative force that must be valued and supported. He will encourage workshop participants to write for radio and to forge links with creative producers who have the technical ability to turn words and images into memorable sound and drama. This workshop will take place on Friday, November 13, from 2 until 5.30 pm.
